Death of Mick Lally

Standard

Irish actor Mick Lally

Three things remind me of that going back to school feeling which even though over 20 years ago comes back vividly each September – (1) The Rose of Tralee on TV (2) the Late, Late Show returns and (3) Sunday nights, 8.30 pm, Glenroe on TV. The programme focused on a cast of characters living in a rural area near the village pub. The main characters were Miley Byrne and Biddy McDermott whose courtship and marriage formed the centerpiece of the action during the early years. So it is sad to hear the news today of the passing of Mick Lally, the fine Irish actor who provided the backdrop to Sunday evenings in my childhood home.

A native of Tourmakeady, Co Mayo, Lally along with Garry Hynes, founded the Druid Theatre company. I saw him several times on stage and he was indeed a fine stage actor. But it was his work on television in the RTÉ series ‘Bracken’ and later ‘Glenroe’ as Miley with his catchphrase well holy God.which made him a household name.
