Baboons in the UK's Knowsley Safari Park unpacking a visitor's suitcase on the roof rack

Ok, not so funny for the poor occupants of the car, but I couldn’t help smiling at memories this brought back to me of  my honeymoon in South Africa. We went to the Cape of Good Hope one day where a baboon made off with my handbag. Lucky for us, a worker there retrieved it.

The Chacma Baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of this species in Africa. They subsist on fruits, roots, bulbs, honey, insects and scorpions. There are signs warning of the dange of baboons at the Cape who are attracted by food and will attack to get at it. Not sure why my handbag proved such an attraction, but looking at this photo, makes me realise we got away lightly!

  1. Hi there

I read your post with great interest, especially as we are shortly heading off to South Africa to get married.

Womens’ handbags always have a life-force of their own. Mien is teeming with all sorts of things!

Love the photos – thanks for the smile this morning.
