An interesting event taking place in my locality next Wednesday, 16th of September at 8.15 p.m. at the community centre, Crusheen, Co Clare.
Dr. Patricia Monaghan, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at DePaul University in Chicago, will discuss the concept of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, also known as “native science,” and how folk traditions sometimes contain scientific information. She will especially focus on the nettle and hawthorn in terms of their nutritious and poisonous aspects, respectively.
Patricia Monaghan is interested in talking with people about traditional concepts of the nettle and the hawthorn, as well as current use (or avoidance) of the plants. She is writing a paper on the science behind Irish folklore and would appreciate comments or stories about these plants. Nettle recipes welcome!
A cup of tea/coffee and a chat guaranteed.
